Best car phone mounts (2026): MagSafe and vent mounts
Get the ESR OmniLock 25W: your phone snaps onto the air vent, stays in view and charges as you drive. If you only need a holder, its non-charging sibling costs about $23 / £20.

The short answer
What matters
Three things decide a car mount: where it fixes, how it grips the phone, and whether it charges. Before any of that, the law. In the UK and in most US states you must not hold your phone while driving, so a mount is how you use maps legally.
More on what matters
Phone size and cases. Magnetic mounts have no width limit, but they do have a hold rating and a case limit. ESR rates its mounts at 1,600–1,800 g and says Samsung phones need a magnetic case no thicker than 2 mm; Anker says cases should be no thicker than 2.5 mm. A thick, non-magnetic case is the usual reason a magnetic mount drops a phone.
Check your vents. Vent mounts hook onto horizontal blades. ESR’s charger fits blades 10–32 mm wide and 1–4 mm thick; round, blade-less and hidden vents won’t work. If that’s your car, use a dash mount instead.
The law: hands off
UK. It is illegal to hold and use a phone or any device that can send or receive data while driving, for any reason. That includes at traffic lights, in queues, and when the phone is offline. A dashboard holder or windscreen mount is allowed, as long as you never hold the phone and it doesn’t block your view of the road. The penalty is 6 points and a £200 fine, and drivers in their first two years lose their licence (GOV.UK).
US. Phone rules are set by each state. The Governors Highway Safety Association counts 33 states plus D.C. that ban handheld use by all drivers, and 49 states that ban texting. In California, for example, you may touch a phone only with a single tap or swipe, and only when it is mounted on the dashboard, centre console, or in a lower corner of the windshield.
Wherever you drive: set the route before you move, and mount the phone where it doesn’t block your view or an airbag.

Our verdicts
ESR OmniLock Magnetic Car Charger (25W)
ResearchedThe one to get if you use your phone for maps on long drives and want it charging while it holds.
Why it’s good
- Fast, cooled wireless charging keeps navigation running all day
- Clear vent-fit spec and a magnetic ring included
Watch out for
- Vent only: no round, blade-less or hidden vents
- Made for iPhone 12 or later (or a phone in a magnetic case); full 25 W needs an iPhone 16 or later
ESR OmniLock Magnetic Car Mount (Air Vent)
ResearchedThe same strong magnetic hold without wireless charging, for $34 / £29 less.
Why it’s good
- Strong magnetic hold for under $25 / £20
- Works with non-MagSafe phones out of the box
You give up
- Wireless charging: you plug the phone in yourself
Quad Lock Car Vent Mount
ResearchedQuad Lock makes a solid, well-reviewed mount, and it is a fine choice if you already use its cases on a bike. For a car-only buyer it is the wrong buy. Quad Lock says the vent mount works only with its own cases or Universal Adaptor, so the cheapest working kit is $64.98 / £49.98, more than double our Budget pick, and it does not charge. Adding the MAG charging head takes the mount to $89.98 / £69.98. Quad Lock also says it does not fit 360-degree gimbal vents.
How we chose
Show how we chose
We compared eight mounts from ESR, Anker, UGREEN, Quad Lock, Peak Design and iOttie, covering vent, dash, windscreen and charging designs. A verdict needed the maker’s spec page plus a live listing in both the US and the UK, so the iOttie clamp (no UK store) and Belkin (different products in each region) could not get one. We weighed how each mount fixes and holds the phone, charging speed, phone and case compatibility, and price. The Anker Prime (25 W, $89.99 / £79.99) is excellent but costs about $33 / £32 more than our Pick for the same charging speed. UGREEN’s MagFlow Pro is cheaper, but its US and UK spec sheets contradict each other.
Tested means we used it ourselves. Researched means we judged it from specs, independent tests, safety rules and owner reports, without using it. We never mark a researched pick as tested.
Questions
Is it legal to have a phone mount on the windscreen?
In the UK, yes, as long as it doesn’t block your view of the road and you don’t hold the phone. In the US it depends on the state; California, for example, allows windshield mounting only in the lower corners.
Will a magnetic mount work with my Android phone?
Only with a magnetic case or a stick-on metal ring. Both ESR OmniLock mounts include a ring. Recent Samsung Galaxy phones need a magnetic case no thicker than 2 mm.
Why does my phone charge slowly on a wireless car mount?
Usually the car socket or adapter is too weak. 25 W wireless charging needs an iPhone 16 or later and a car adapter of roughly 35–45 W; iPhone 12 to 15 top out at 15 W.
My car has round vents. What should I buy?
Skip vent mounts and use a dash or windscreen suction mount, or a cup holder mount. ESR and Quad Lock both sell dash versions.
