What you need
- Your phone.
- The Wi-Fi network’s name and password. At home, ask whoever set up your internet or check the paperwork from your internet provider. Away from home, ask staff for the details.
On an iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Wi-Fi and make sure Wi-Fi is turned on.
- Tap the name of the network you want to join.
- Type the password if asked.
- A blue tick next to the network name means you’re connected.
On an Android phone
Some steps need Android 12 or later, and menus can look a little different on some phones.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Network and Internet, then Internet.
- Tap a network in the list. A padlock means it needs a password.
- Type the password and connect.
Quicker way: swipe down from the top of the screen, tap Internet, and pick a network from the panel.
If it won’t connect
- Check Airplane Mode is off. On an iPhone, it’s near the top of Settings.
- Check other devices. If nothing in the house can connect, the problem is the router. Apple suggests unplugging the router, then plugging it back in.
- Move closer to the router. You may be out of range.
- Wi-Fi switch is greyed out on an iPhone? Restart your phone.
- Connected but no internet? Try the Wi-Fi on another device. If that doesn’t work either, contact your internet provider.
