How do I stop ChatGPT using my chats to train its AI?

Unless you change a setting, OpenAI may use your ChatGPT conversations to train its AI. To stop it, open Settings, then Data controls, and turn off Improve the model for everyone. It takes under a minute, and your old chats stay where they are.

On your phone (iPhone or Android app)

  1. Open the ChatGPT app.
  2. Open the sidebar menu.
  3. Tap your profile icon to open Settings.
  4. Tap Data controls.
  5. Turn off Improve the model for everyone.

If you’re signed in, this applies to your account on all your devices.

On a computer (chatgpt.com)

  1. Go to chatgpt.com and sign in.
  2. Open your account menu.
  3. Select Settings, then Data controls.
  4. Select Improve the model for everyone, turn it off, and select Done.

Not signed in? Open Settings and turn off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI says the choice is saved in that browser only.

For private questions: Temporary Chat

OpenAI says a temporary chat:

  • doesn’t appear in your chat history;
  • doesn’t create or update ChatGPT’s memories about you;
  • isn’t used to improve OpenAI’s models;
  • may be kept for up to 30 days for safety reasons.

Temporary doesn’t mean secret. Even in a temporary chat, never type passwords, bank details or other private information.

Good to know

  • Turning it off doesn’t delete anything. Your saved chats stay in your history. Delete a chat separately if you want it gone.
  • Thumbs up and thumbs down count. OpenAI says that if you rate an answer, the whole conversation may be used for training, even after you’ve turned the setting off.
  • Can’t change it? A parent or guardian, or a work account, may control this setting for you.
