Best Bluetooth speakers: 1 to buy, 1 cheap, 1 to skip
Buy the UE WONDERBOOM 4: it shrugs off dust, water and drops, floats, and lasts 14 hours. For less, the soundcore 3 plays for 24 hours in stereo; skip the Bose SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen), which costs more and lasts less.

The short answer
What matters
Look for the IP rating first. The first number is dust and the second is water, so IP67 means dust-tight and waterproof, while IPX7 is waterproof but not rated for dust. Then compare the maker’s battery hours.
More on what matters
Battery hours are each maker’s own figure, measured their own way (Bose, for example, tests at 50% volume), so treat them as a guide. Louder listening drains any speaker faster.

Our verdicts
UE WONDERBOOM 4
ResearchedThe toughest speaker we could verify under $100 / £100, with a full dust and water rating.
Why it’s good
- IP67: dust-tight and waterproof, and it floats if it falls in the pool
- Rated for 1.5 m drops, 14 hours of play and 40 m of range
Watch out for
- One speaker plays in mono (pair two for stereo), and the USB-C cable isn’t in the box
soundcore 3
ResearchedStereo sound and the longest battery here for $20 / £10 less, if you don’t need it dustproof or drop-rated.
Why it’s good
- Rated for 24 hours, the longest of the three
- 16W stereo from one speaker
You give up
- Dust protection (IPX7 is waterproof only) and a published drop rating
Bose SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen)
ResearchedIt’s a popular buy and a well-made speaker, but the numbers don’t add up. Bose sells it for $129 / £119.95 and rates it for up to 12 hours with an IP67 rating. Our Pick has the same IP67 rating, is rated for 14 hours and costs $79.99 / £69.99. Unless you want the Bose name, you pay about $50 / £50 more for less battery.
How we chose
Show how we chose
We compared seven speakers under about $100 / £100 from Ultimate Ears, soundcore, Bose and JBL, and only ranked models we could check on the maker’s own US and UK stores (JBL’s site blocked our checks). We weighed the dust and water rating first, then rated battery life, toughness and price.
Tested means we used it ourselves. Researched means we judged it from specs, independent tests, safety rules and owner reports, without using it. We never mark a researched pick as tested.
Questions
Can I use a Bluetooth speaker in the shower?
Yes, if it’s rated IPX7 or IP67. Both of our picks are; keep the charging port closed and dry it before charging.
Do I need two speakers for stereo?
The UE WONDERBOOM 4 plays in mono on its own, and UE says you can pair two for stereo. The soundcore 3 plays stereo from one speaker.
Does it work with my phone?
Any of these pair with iPhone and Android phones over Bluetooth. Turn the speaker on, open your phone’s Bluetooth settings and tap the speaker’s name.
